This month the ELC is celebrating! Our team received a Team Achievement Award for successfully running our first ever online PEASS course.
Previously, we had always run our 5 and 10-week PEASS courses on campus. However, in spring of this year it was unclear whether our international students would be able to travel to the UK to attend our classes, so we were asked to adapt our regular PEASS course in preparation for online delivery.
We decided that the best experience for students would be one in which they had access to high quality materials for independent study, while also participating in daily live sessions in small groups. MS Teams was chosen as our Virtual Learning Environment and it proved to be a reliable, accessible, and interactive platform, ideal for supporting collaboration.
We made sure that extra time was dedicated to one-to-one tutorials this year and also created a new role for a support tutor who provided extra group sessions before the beginning of classes each morning. This meant that our online students received plenty of individual attention and extra help with their learning throughout the course.
In addition, we redesigned our assessments to suit the online environment. A continuous assessment approach was implemented with students building an e-portfolio with an emphasis on reflection on the learning process. This was so successful that it will also be applied to our on-campus courses from 2021.
Our first online PEASS was a resounding success, with 138 of 139 students passing the course. None of this would have been possible of course without our team of dedicated and experienced tutors who were there to guide students through each of their assessments. Also, we couldn’t have done it without the ongoing administrative support from our ELC admin team, Wendy and Ricky! They made sure that all our students were able to complete their enrolment process and get online on time for week 1.
