Active ListeningThis course focusses on the skills needed to better understand lectures and the strategies good listeners use.

In this course you will learn:

– how to better understand how academic lectures are structured

– how to understand language that lecturers use when making important points

– language that lecturers use when moving from one section of a lecture to the next

– strategies to help understand speakers with different accents

– how to make effective notes

Course duration: 6 lessons in total,  1 lesson per week  /  Lesson duration: 1 hour 15 minutes

Class Time:  The Intermediate & Upper Intermediate level classes are on Tuesdays, 17:00 – 18:15

In this course you will learn about:

– sentence structure and academic vocabulary

– how to introduce opinion in an academic/formal style

– common grammatical errors and how to avoid them

– how to write in a more academic style

– how and when to use past, present and future tenses

 

New Material for Term 2

This course contains new material and therefore is different from the Term 1 course.  However, you don’t need to have attended Grammar for Academic Writing 1 to participate in this course.

 

Course Schedule

Course duration: 6 lessons in total,  1 lesson per week  /  Lesson duration: 1 hour 15 minutes

Class Time:  Both the Intermediate & Upper Intermediate level classes and the Advanced classes are on Wednesdays, 17:00 – 18:15

Starts: Wednesday 30th January (academic week 19)  /  Ends: Wednesday 6th March (academic week 24)

– how to understand the difference between polite/formal and impolite/informal language

– learn how to use correct tone and intonation

– practise and recognise the different consonant sounds in English

– practise how to produce words and sentences with the correct stress

– practise and recognise the voiced and unvoiced consonant sounds

– learn how the pronunciation of words is affected by connected speech
